If you’ve ever dreamed of building a career in marine conservation, especially in hands-on, field-based work, this episode is for you. I’m not sharing this from the perspective of someone who has it all figured out. I’m in the messy middle, learning in real time, and I want to be honest about what this path actually looks like. So join me in this unfiltered episode where I share my unfiltered thoughts on getting where we’re going in ocean conservation.
One of the hardest realizations I’ve had is that the traditional “apply and wait” model doesn’t really work in marine conservation. Experience and relationships matter more than degrees alone, and many of the roles I dream about aren’t sitting neatly on Indeed or LinkedIn. I’m learning that I have to create opportunities instead of waiting for them to appear. That means networking, cold emailing organizations, and building relationships before a job is ever posted.
Loving the ocean doesn’t automatically translate into paid work. Passion doesn’t pay the bills, and lifestyle sustainability matters. I’m currently balancing seasonal marine science work with bartending, and I’m not ashamed of that. Financial stability allows me to stay in this field long-term. Passion is what keeps me going through the scrappy seasons, but sustainability is what protects me from burnout.
Careers in conservation rarely follow a straight line. I’ve changed directions, stepped off ladders that weren’t right for me, and tried different roles to figure out where I fit. That zigzagging isn’t failure, it’s just part of the process. Just like ecosystems move in cycles and adapt, our careers do too. Clarity doesn’t come from waiting, it comes from doing.
If you’re in a season that feels uncertain or slow, you’re not alone. I’m figuring this out alongside you, and I truly believe that the more of us who stay committed to this work, the more good we can do for the ocean. So, let’s encourage each other, help each other, and make our ocean-sized dreams come true. I believe there’s room for everyone to succeed in this field and when we succeed, the ocean gets the care it needs.
